During the height of the Seminole Wars in 1838, Orlando first became a city. To defend settlers from raids by Indians, the U.S. Army constructed Fort Gatlin south of the current city limits of Orlando. Around the Fort developed a small hamlet by the year 1840. The Jernigan family, who had founded the region's first permanent settlement, named the place Jernigan. Founded on May 30, 1850, Jernigan had a post office. Orlando became the community's official name six years later as the settlement grew to the north. The name change was accepted by the United States Postal Service in 1857. 85 people, including 22 eligible voters, lived in the Town of Orlando when it was formed in 1875. The city was once built to serve as the end of a significant state-sponsored railway.
