What you should know about Orlando

During the height of the Seminole Wars in 1838, Orlando first became a city. To defend settlers from raids by Indians, the U.S. Army constructed Fort Gatlin south of the current city limits of Orlando.

Around the Fort developed a small hamlet by the year 1840. The Jernigan family, who had founded the region's first permanent settlement, named the place Jernigan. Founded on May 30, 1850, Jernigan had a post office.

Orlando became the community's official name six years later as the settlement grew to the north. The name change was accepted by the United States Postal Service in 1857. 85 people, including 22 eligible voters, lived in the Town of Orlando when it was formed in 1875. Where the name Orlando came from in history is not entirely understood. The stories told span four different categories. One relates to Judge James Speer, who put in a lot of effort to have Orlando chosen as the county seat and named it after his former employee. Bok tower garden

Bok Tower Gardens, a famous art deco and neo-Gothic legend in Lake Wales that towers over the Central Florida landscape at a height of more than 200 feet, has drawn visitors from the day it debuted in 1929. Visitors can stroll under the shadow of the tower that houses a carillon, an instrument made up of a number of bells operated by a keyboard that is built upon the highest elevation in peninsular Florida. A 250-acre lush tropical landscape that serves as both a meditative garden and a bird sanctuary was built on Iron Mountain from what was previously a barren sand mound.
